NOVO is an innovative way of organizing a clothing drive for our community.

Aspiring fashion designers have collaborated with the rest of the team in creating original clothing lines with donated clothes as an act of making the old, new.

Our mission is to connect the Los Angeles community to a cause through clothing.

    Clothing Line Preview: Bohemian

“  I’m a firm believer in dressing comfortably, but at the same time, also being fashionable. That’s why my style has always been very laid back and simple. I love to wear clothes that aren’t overbearing and extravagant but can still grab your attention by the means of colors or accessories.  It’s finally getting warmer here in California and I can see that people are beginning to transition from their winter outerwear to their spring clothing. Girls at my school are starting to wear bright floral tank tops with shorts and colorful sundresses. I just love the weather right now, how it’s always breezy and sunny and just the right temperature to chill at the beach. I have this perfect image in my head of me and my girlfriends driving down to Santa Barbara, shopping at all the neat vintage clothing stores and picnicking on the shore while watching the sunset.

I wanted my outfits to embody that carefree spirit of relaxation and fun. That’s why the style for my clothes is bohemian and girlie. I feel like all the outfits are easy to move around in and comfortable, but at the same time, a girl can still feel very pretty wearing them. All the designs are just a few key pieces like skirts and dresses with different accessories like belts, scarves, and bangles to dress it up. And I also love color, which is why most of the outfits consist of all different mixes of colors and textures. My goal is to make a girl can feel completely and utterly free and beautiful in them! Hopefully I’ll be successful.”

    Clothing Line Preview : Safari-Chic

Welcome to our Clothing Line Preview series!  We are about a week and a half away from the the fashion show and we wanted to give our readers a taste of what to look forward to. Enjoy!

” Our line may best be described as Safari-Chic.  With a twist on the jungle, our line offers safari-inspired clothing at its best.  Comfortable, practical, and stylish, what else could a girl ask for? Our line consists of neutral colors ranging from Navy blue to Khaki, but is always accented with a pop of color from either a ruby red necklace or a golden arm bangle.  Perfect for a sophisticated but casual day out, our line offers femininity and classiness with a little bit of that safari-edge, and is an ideal pick for this upcoming spring season.  With our cuffed blazers, pleated shorts, and feminine touches, you’re sure to be the next queen of jungle.  Jane would be jealous. “

    Little by little

“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together”- Vincent Van Gough

Since the inception of the original idea to have a fashion show I don’t think any of us really thought that it would be what it’s slowly becoming.

3 months ago it was just going to be a fashion show using old clothes.  Now it’s a full blown cause with a collective purpose.  A collaboration of different organizations and aspiring artists who want to be the change in the community.  It seems like every week we get news of someone who’s jumping on the NOVO ship to lend a hand in this project.  Whether it be a local/international organization, designers or artists, NOVO has become a vehicle for change and impact in our local community.

And in some random way today, this whole process reminded me of legos.   Before legos got all cool with themes like Star Wars, X-Men and Harry Potter, you just had a red bucket full of blocks.  No instructions were there to tell you what to make, nor were there any pictures on the outside you could use as a guide.  You just had your imagination.

Now, I’ll admit that I had a limited imagination and all I really could come up with and build were “flying-fighting-spaceships” (creative, no?).  In any case, I would always build a basic ship: Base + 2 wings + 2 lasers + 1 cockpit. But it was just too simple and plain.

And that’s where the fun part came in.  Digging through the red bucket and adding pieces little by little, not knowing exactly what I wanted it to look like, but I knew it was going to be better than what it was.  And just like that, it went from “flying-fighting-spaceship” to Star Destroyer.

    What’s the point?

I think you get what I’m trying to say here.  Yes, we could just have a fashion show and I’m sure it would be loads of fun and we would still be able to impact our community. But with those extra pieces added (organizations, designers, artists) we become even a greater force of cause in our community.

Don’t ever be afraid to reach in the red bucket to find those missing pieces. Your idea is a good, but like the adage says “2 is always greater than 1”

    ——————————————————-

The show is 17 more days and I hope to see you there.  Thanks for reading and look forward to our clothing line previews starting Monday.

    One and Three Weeks

Hi everyone, Ellen here with yet another sporadic update about the show. We’re one day and three weeks away from opening and speaking for team, we’re all very excited. Organizations that we’ve teamed up with and will be having info booths at the event include, Dream Center Los Angeles, ePATH, Mercy House, Just4One, Helping Hands Caring Hears, Mission 4 Him, HMLTY, Working Wardrobes, and TOMS Shoes. These booths will be providing volunteer opportunities for their organizations and also provide information about what they do.

As for sponsorship, we’re still looking for companies or individuals willing to help cover our production costs –stage building, food, and prints. Contact us at novofashion@gmail.com if you need a sponsorship letter or fact sheet to help generate our fund.

Parker and Josh have started building the stage. They’ve completed the backdrop wall and only need to put in the diagonal stationeries for the runway. (I think that’s what they’re called. I’m making up terminologies, really.)

Wendy has compiled the work of all the designers. I wish I can show you some pix, but I’ll get in trouble.

And for model/stage prep, I contacted a makeup artist, Jill, from Project Ethos and she’s helping us compile a list of artists/stylists from MUD. These people are GOOD and Jill said many were eager to help out with our cause.

It’s been an exciting past couple of days. We’ve made connections through different organizations, and I’m totally blown away by the amount of support we’d been receiving from people we’ve never even met! Did I mention TOMS shoes are sponsoring us? They’re providing the staff and designers with their products (shoes) so we’ll be rockin and promoting their cause as well.

    Until next time.

    Quote of the week:

“God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks to us in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: It is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world” –C.S. Lewis

We wish to be the voice for the unheard.

    Hello viewers,

It’s been a long weekend and we’ve been moving along just fine. We’ve been receiving help with getting the word out about NOVO through twitter and also meeting different networks through our new core member, Jonathan Chan. With his help we’ve been able to get Mark Horvath of Invisible People to come speak at the event. On a good note, today, we were able to receive the materials for the stage and will Parker will probably start building soon.

Tomorrow, Wendy(Fashion Coordinator), Jessica (Project Leader), and I will be meeting to get everyone on the same page about everything: models, desingers, food, volunteers, fitting, rehearsal, stage management, call times, hair/makeup, booths, organizations, ect…We will be contacting everyone on the team (from volunteers to desingers), with updates and info.

    Super excited about the event!

    One Month and Counting!

We’re 4 weeks away from our event!

A few updates of how things are coming along..

    • Designers will be turning in some of their outfits this week. So far we have 8 unique lines that all have their own little twist to them.
    • We also have a great selection of food for the night. Wilbur has selected some pretty scrumptous refreshments— one of them includes a chocolate fountain!
    • Ellen is working on getting a press release out to the local cities (Diamond Bar, Walnut, Chino Hills, Rowland Heights, etc.)
    • Our friends in Long Beach are putting together a dance for the opening act!
    • We’re building our runway and stage from scratch. If anyone is on spring break, and wants to brush up on some carpentry skills, come out and help Parker!
    • Kevin’s putting together a team to promote NOVO in schools around the area. Contact us if you want to promote at your school!
    • So far, TOMS Shoes, LA Dream Center, Just 1 and PATH will be joining us on April 25th. We’re still working on a two speakers, and other organizations such as: Cory’s Kitchen, Mercy House, Tent City… I really hope we can get as many of these organizations to come out. This way we can really bring awareness to local and global poverty.

The clothing drive is still going on, and we have tons of rack space that we want to see filled by the end of next month! So keep digging in your closets :)

Thoughts on March Madness and other things

I am once again heartbroken by my Bruins failed attempt at bringing home banner #12 to Pauely Pavillion.  That would be 4 years in a row that they’ve been out played and hustled by the future elite class of NBA hasbeens.  March is never good to me.  In any case, I thought it’d be appropriate to update my “hate you” list

    1. I hate you Florida (still)
    2. I hate you Memphis (hope you choke and lose)
    3. I hate you Villanova (hope you lose too)
    4. I hate you Vladmir Radmanvoic (enough said)

Okay, that’s all the basketball ranting for today.  Yes, it was random, but very necessary.

On better news, the website is now officially finished.  I know it’s nothing fancy but this is my first time playing around with tumblr.  Which I must say is much simpler and user friendly compared to Wordpress.  I haven’t adjusted it to be viewed in IE and probably won’t do so since I don’t really care for IE much, so if you’re using IE and can read this, kudos to you.  Otherwise, the site is best viewed in Firefox.

    A couple of things:

    • We are still collecting clothes and will do so up until the day of the event.  If you’re spring cleaning and find stuff you don’t want anymore, donate!
    • We are also looking for volunteers for the day of the event.  Parking, food serving, ushering, cleaning, etc.  Let us know and we’ll find something for you
    • We are looking for more organizations to be represented at the event.  If you are a part of, or know any that deal with measures to help local poverty, please let us know

    Email us at NOVOFASHION@GMAIL.COM

    Have a good one guys.

    35 days and counting...

Hello viewers. The team and I must apologies for the lack of postings. As we each are busy with our own individual lives outside of Novo, posting on our fashion show website has not been a priority as it should’ve been. This is our only means of communication with each of you, our viewers, so please bear with us as we continue to construct the layout of our site and update information on the show.

With that said, we’re excited to share that we got our first company sponsorship for the show! MSI Computer is generously contributing to a large portion of our budget. Since the Novo planning team consists of nothing but a bunch of broke college students, we could not make any large purchases until we receive the money at hand. (So sad)

Lets see, Dream Center of Los Angeles will be coming out to set up an informational booth before and after the show for anyone who’d like to volunteer. We’re still working on getting other non-profits out to the show to set up info booths.

As for the show itself, we currently have 7 designers each with their own unique clothing line. The lines I know for sure are: “Party Dress”, “Rock/Punk Wear”, and “Reuse the used.” I’m sure the actual names of the lines sound much cooler, but the genre falls along the same lines.

I think that’s all for now. Follow us on twitter! We’ve RSS the tweets on the lefthand side of our site. Or you can find us @novofashion.
